HIGH-ACCURACY GEARS FOR CRITICAL APPLICATIONS

Gear grinding removes material from hardened gear flanks with abrasive wheels to achieve tighter tooth profile tolerances, lower surface roughness, and higher geometry accuracy than hobbing alone can deliver.

Our grinding, including CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) gear grinding, produces gears that hold up where noise, vibration, load capacity, and service life actually matter. We use CBN grinding for efficient medium-to-high-volume production and have refined the process across years of automotive, aftermarket, and OEM work. We finish-grind spur and helical gears from 2 to 48 diametral pitch, up to 700 mm in diameter, to AGMA 15.

Applications include robotics joints, medical motion systems, defense mechanisms, precision gearboxes, and any system where gear quality directly determines system performance.

WHY PRECISION GROUND GEARS

Ground gears beat hobbed-only gears on every measure that counts, and the gap matters most when the gear is what keeps the whole machine reliable.

Noise Reduction

Precise tooth profile control and superior surface finish (Ra) significantly reduce gear mesh noise. Critical for medical devices, robotics, and packaging equipment where noise is a performance or regulatory parameter.

Vibration Minimization

Tight lead and profile tolerances produce consistent gear meshing. Minimized transmission error reduces vibration in high-speed gearboxes, servo drives, and motion control systems.

Increased Load Capacity

Heat-treating and grinding increase tooth strength and optimize tooth contact. Hard, ground gears handle high transmitted loads with greater reliability than soft, cut-only gears.

Consistency

Tight, repeatable tooth geometry from part to part across full production runs. Ground gears deliver predictable, repeatable performance every time.

GEAR GRINDING EQUIPMENT

We run a set of CNC gear grinders, several of them CBN-capable, which gives us the precision and the capacity to handle demanding OEM programs.

GEAR GRINDING: COMMON QUESTIONS

INSCO is capable of producing gears to AGMA 15, the highest AGMA quality classification. This is achieved using continuous generating grinding on Reishauer and Hofler platforms with precise wheel dressing, thermal control, and 100% analytical gear inspection on M&M and Penta analytical machines and Vari-Roll ultra-precision checkers.
INSCO grinds gears up to 700mm (approximately 27.6") in diameter on the Hofler Helix 700 CNC grinder. For gear cutting, INSCO can hob gears up to 1,000mm diameter on the Pfauter P1000.
CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) grinding uses superabrasive wheels that maintain their profile longer than conventional abrasive wheels, allowing tighter process control and higher throughput. CBN is typically used for high-volume programs, hard materials (above 58 HRC), and applications requiring the tightest AGMA tolerances with minimal thermal impact to the gear surface.
Yes. All precision ground gears are inspected on analytical gear inspection machines, and INSCO provides full inspection documentation including involute profile, lead, pitch, runout, and surface finish data against AGMA and customer-specified tolerances. CMM reports are available on request.
Yes. INSCO provides grinding-only services for gears that were cut by other suppliers, provided the gear geometry and material are compatible with INSCO's grinding platforms. Contact our engineering team to review your specific gear data.
